Dark Companion Records

Wyrd Tales of an Antiquary (Dark Companion) marks another step in Paul Roland’s evolution as both a distinctive singer-songwriter and a composer of contemporary classical music. The album features a series of “extended narrative songs” — each over eight minutes, unfolding like self-contained short stories — interwoven with instrumental interludes drawn from his Grimm Fantasy for Orchestra (presented here in their original demo form, with all instruments played by Roland).

The result is an atmospheric blend of delicately orchestrated acoustic songs and pastoral interludes, evoking dark fairy tales and supernatural encounters. It’s a haunting, immersive experience that showcases Roland’s unique storytelling voice and has further solidified his cult following.

“I hadn’t planned a solo album,” says Roland, “but after contributing two songs to a delayed H.P. Lovecraft project, I realised I had enough material to complete one. It all seemed to come together beautifully and I can honestly say that no other album of mine has given me as much pleasure and satisfaction to make or to listen to and I hope others will love it just as much”
