Jugalbandi Trio

2019 – UP005
In Hindustani classical music, jugalbandi refers to a duet in which two soloists engage in a dynamic, improvised exploration of a raga. Marked by playful challenge, mutual inspiration, and deep interplay, this form captivates both performers and audiences. Supporting them is a rhythmic framework provided by one or more expert percussionists, typically on tabla.
Jugalbandi Trio offers a modern take on this tradition, with a name that nods to jazz ensembles. Comprising Nicolò Melocchi (bansuri), Leo Vertunni (sitar), and Federico Sanesi (tabla), the group adopts a collaborative approach to composition and performance. Their repertoire blends concise raga development with arranged structures, unison themes, and ample space for improvisation. The result is music that remains rooted in Hindustani classical form while embracing innovation in presentation and interplay — honouring tradition yet expanding its expressive potential.
