Grimmer Than Grimm
Paul Roland w/ Mick Crossley

2018 – UP003/UPLP003
True to his habit of revisiting past work, Paul Roland has reworked his long-deleted 2011 album Grimm, a sought-after collector’s item. This time, he enlisted Mick Crossley (Flyte Reaction), who added subtle psychedelic textures, giving the album a new depth and tone. “I’d always thought Grimm was strong, but it lacked personality since I played all the instruments myself,” Paul explained. “Now it feels fully realized — probably my personal favourite.” Crossley described his “remote contribution” as deliberately restrained, aiming to enhance rather than overwhelm the delicate songs. Using echo-laden guitars, rotary speaker effects, bones, cymbals, and occasional backing vocals, he created an atmosphere of “mystery and otherness,” adding dreamlike textures that float in and out of the mix. The result is a richer, more haunting version of the original album.
